Hailakandi, Dec 13: On Wednesday, 18 victims of different parts of Hailakandi district got compensation under the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA) Victim Compensation Scheme – 2012.
A total of 1,980,000 rupees were disbursed on that day for victims of rape, murder, and other criminal cases. The compensation was provided through a cheque distribution ceremony organized by the Hailakandi District Judiciary.
The event was attended by District and Sessions Judge Sanjoy Hazarika, Additional District Judge Mahmud Hossain Borbhuiya, Additional Commissioner Tridib Roy, CEO of the Zila Parishad Joydeep Shukla, Superintendent of Police Leena Doley, DSP Surajit Choudhury, District Legal Service Authority, Secretary Bidyabrat Acharya, and other officials.
The ceremony also saw the presence of Fakhrul Islam, the Secretary of the Hailakandi Bar Association, Kobir Ahmed Chowdhury, the Secretary of the voluntary organization Udichi, DSW Kavindra Warisa, lawyer Prithwish Das, Monika Dev, Azizur Rahman Laskar, and others.
During the event, Civil Judge K. E. Bhaisnav provided various information about the Victim Compensation Scheme.
On this day, cheques for compensation were handed over to 18 victims and their families in seven cases. Bidyabrat Acharya, Secretary DLSA, informed that two victims who did not come to receive compensation Cheques can collect the same from the DLSA office, also. He also mentioned that an additional 1 million rupees as compensation will be provided in the future.
A seasoned lawyer from the Hailakandi Bar Association stated that with the assistance of the central government, the state government compensates financially to minors who are victims of sexual assault. The amount of compensation is determined by the court. Additionally, if there are no specific directions from the court, the state legal services authority compensates. If the court deems the compensation insufficient, it may decide to provide additional compensation.
