In Hailakandi town, a daylight shootout resulted in the death of notorious dacoit Afzal Hossain Barbhuiya, alias Lal.
The incident occurred at 11:32 AM when a Cento car, carrying Lal, stopped in front of Paul Pharmacy on SS Road.
A team of four plainclothes Cachar police officers surrounded the car and confronted Lal, who attempted to attack them.
In response, Malugram Police Outpost In-Charge, Pragyan Gogoi, shot Lal, who died on the spot. Lal’s one accomplice, Anam Uddin Laskar, was also arrested.
The shootout caused panic in the busy area, with shops closing and chaos erupting.
Hailakandi DSP Surjit Choudhury arrived and took Lal’s body to SK Roy Civil Hospital.
Eyewitnesses initially mistook the police for rival gang members until they revealed their identity after arresting Laskar.
SP Leena Doley stated that a .303 pistol and live rounds were recovered from Lal’s car.
Lal had been tracked by his mobile location and was forced to stop at a no-entry board near the police reserve.
Lal had a criminal history with eight cases of robbery and kidnapping in Cachar, was involved in an interstate car theft ring, and had previously attacked a police constable.
The police ambushed him following his recent crimes, leading to the fatal encounter.
