In the sweltering heat of Hailakandi, where temperatures have soared past 38 degrees Celsius, life has become unbearable.
Amidst this scorching weather, the residents of Hailakandi are facing yet another calamity—an acute drinking water crisis.
For the past 48 hours, the citizens have been desperately seeking even a drop of potable water.
The city’s water supply system has collapsed once again.
This time, the overhead tank motor of the Public Health Engineering (PHE) Department in Ward No. 9 has broken down, halting the water supply throughout Hailakandi.
The situation is so dire that residents, setting aside their dignity, are compelled to travel long distances to fetch water, yet they still struggle to find enough.
Ward No. 9 Commissioner Raju Chakraborty disclosed that the condition of the PHE Department’s motors is deplorable.
These motors have been in operation for nearly 35 years and were barely functional, patched up repeatedly until now.
With the latest breakdown, there’s no telling when the residents will receive regular water supply again.
In the past two years, the motors and pipelines of the PHE Department have malfunctioned 39 times, severely disrupting the water supply.
Despite this recurring issue, District Magistrate Nisarga Hivare Gautam and guardian minister Jayanta Mallabaruah seem indifferent.
The “Citizen Rights Protection Committee” of Hailakandi has met with the guardian minister several times over the past year to address the water crisis, but their efforts have been in vain.
Both the minister and the district magistrate have failed to secure this basic necessity for the residents.
Chairman Kalyan Goswami and his council have also been unable to resolve the crisis. The failure of the PHE Department and the Hailakandi administration has left the citizens in a dire situation.
The residents are enduring tremendous hardship in their daily lives, and the lack of effective measures to address the water crisis has only fuelled their anger.
Residents of Hailakandi are now demanding urgent and effective action to alleviate the crisis.
The situation calls for immediate intervention to restore regular water supply and relieve the suffering of the people.
