A special awareness program was held today at Hailakandi SS College to promote road safety and prevent accidents.
Organized by the District Transport Department, the program aimed to instill road safety rules among the students of the college.
Officials including District Transport Officer Rupmili Terangpi, DSP (Prof) Haricharan Bhumiz, civilian Hiralal Debnath, College Lecturer Tajuddin Khan,
transport inspector Parag Soikia, and journalist Nilotpol Deb discussed the necessary steps to maintain road safety and the five principles of road safety.
The program, organized in collaboration with the SS College’s NSS unit, included discussions on various aspects of road safety.
District Transport Officer Teragpi informed that as part of the Road Safety Month celebration, awareness campaigns are being conducted at various locations across the district.
The purpose of today’s event at SS College was to identify the reasons behind accidents involving students and to discuss necessary preventive measures, she added.
DSP Haricharan Bhumiz highlighted that in 2023, the Hailakandi Police department collected nearly two and a half crores in fines for violating traffic laws.
He emphasized that the police’s goal is not merely to collect fines but to ensure strict adherence to traffic laws to prevent accidents and financial losses.
Professor Tajuddin Khan stressed the importance of obeying traffic signals to prevent accidents.
He mentioned the efforts made by Transport Minister Parimal Suklabaidya to mobilize public support for road safety by organizing bike rallies in 126 constituencies of the state.
He noted that awareness programs in schools, colleges, and universities have contributed to reducing accidents in the state.
He expressed hope that if college students adhere to the fundamental rules of road safety, accidents can be avoided.
During the event, citizen Hiralal Debnath also emphasized the significance of traffic signals and the importance of adhering to them.
