In an official event at S.S. College ground today, the ration card distribution process for 90,510 individuals in the Hailakandi district took place.
The distribution ceremony was inaugurated by the Honorable Guardian Minister Jayanta Malla Baruah. A total of 8,163 new ration cards were distributed of the Hailakandi Legislative Assembly constituency, benefiting 45,012 beneficiaries in the constituency. These cards entitle them to receive 5 kilograms of rice along with the benefits of Ayushman Bharat Health Card and Ujjwala scheme.
The district commissioner, N.H. Gautam, presided over the event, with the presence of Hailakandi’s MLA Zakir Hussain Laskar, Ratabari MLA Bijoy Malakar, and Katlicherra MLA Sujam Uddin Laskar.
Later, Minister Baruah discussed with journalists, mentioning that due to the Supreme Court’s jurisdiction, ration cards are not provided to those biometrically trapped under the National Register of Citizens (NRC).
The issue has already gained attention at the central government level, and if approved by the government and the Supreme Court, ration cards will be distributed even to those affected by NRC.
In response to a political question, Guardian Minister Baruah claimed that Rahul Gandhi’s “Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra has been a super flop in Assam, often making headlines for invalidating laws. Therefore, the journey is facing legal challenges in various places.
Looking ahead, on January 25th, a similar ration card distribution event is scheduled for Algapur-Katlicherra constituency, where 8,702 families will receive new ration cards.
Assam Legislative Assembly’s Deputy Speaker Dr. Numal Momin will be present at the distribution ceremony.
