In response to customer complaints, the Legal Metrology Department conducted a raid on Saturday to verify the legality of weights and measurements used in the Hailakandi’s Harbartganj market.
During the raid, charges were filed against four fish vendors. Additionally, a notice was issued to a meat seller by the Legal Metrology Department.
It’s noteworthy that customer harassment complaints in the Harbartganj market have been ongoing for a long time.
Particularly, customers are consistently being deceived in the weight of fish and meat in the market.
While some use stones to tamper with weights, digital scale users among the traders also manipulate weights, as evidenced by numerous cases already found.
Irregularities came to light during the campaign by the Legal Metrology Department. Many stones used to adjust the weight of fish in the market have been seized.
For example, one kilogram of stone actually weighs 940 grams.
This means that customers from Hailakandi are getting almost 60 grams less for every kilogram of fish purchased. Assistant Controller Bhavendra Nath Das informed that cases have been filed against traders who tampered with weights.
Furthermore, many weighing machines used by meat sellers also showed extensive tampering. He urged customers in Hailakandi to be vigilant and not just when buying fish and meat but for all purchases.
Saturday’s campaign was attended by officials from the police and CRPF along with inspectors from the Legal Metrology Department, including HiraKjit Kaushik, departmental employees Masuk Ahmed Ansari, Amir Hossain Boro Bhuiya, and Swaraj Choudhury.
