In Hailakandi, two language activists, Kishori Mohan Nath and Santosh Kumar Majumdar, were honored during the “Unisher Ahbane Bahubhashik Pothchola” event on May 16, commemorating Language Martyrs’ Day on May 19.
This was the first time such an event was organized in the three districts of Barak Valley: Cachar, Karimganj, and Hailakandi.
The ceremony, presided over by poet Sushanta Mohan Chattopadhyay, recognized the contributions of these activists to the 1961 Bengali Language Movement.
Kishori Mohan Nath, a former principal, and Santosh Kumar Majumdar, a social worker, received honors and mementos.
Nath shared memories of leading student protests during the language movement when he was the general secretary of the Sri Krishna Sarada College student union.
Majumdar also recounted the events of that time. Additionally, journalists Bonsree Ghosh Dole from Dhaka and Professor Swapan Biswas from Toronto were honored.
The event concluded with a colorful procession through the city, involving participants of all ages, which ended at the language martyr memorial. Secretary of the event, Gautam Gupta, expressed gratitude to the people of Hailakandi for making the “Pothchola” program a real success
