In the run-up to Independence Day, there is significant tension in Hailakandi district following the arrest of a supporter of the banned militant organization Al-Qaeda.
Today, the police charged Rezwan Ullah Majarbhuiya, an Al-Qaeda supporter, with conspiracy against the country and presented him in court. Rezwan was charged under sections 61(2), 147, and 196 of the BNS.
The police presented Rezwan in court under strict security measures.The special court in Hailakandi has ordered that Rezwan be held in police remand for three days.
Meanwhile, additional Superintendent of Police Samir Daptar Baruah provided startling details about Rezwan’s arrest.
During a press briefing, Baruah revealed that Rezwan had mentioned on a Facebook page called “Amader Hailakandi” that despite paying taxes in India, he had links with the active militant organization Al-Qaeda in Pakistan.
Furthermore, Rezwan had also mentioned on social media about a possible change in the government in Assam following Bangladesh.
The additional police Super noted that the police are aware of the existence of several sleeper cells of Al-Qaeda in Assam.
Following Rezwan’s arrest in Hailakandi, the Assam police have begun a highly important investigation into the matter. He also mentioned that the Facebook group “Amader Hailakandi” has approximately eleven thousand members, and the social media monitoring cell of the district is closely observing the Facebook IDs that were in contact with Rezwan.
Following the police investigation, more individuals may be arrested in connection with this case, according to the additional Superintendent of Police.
Additionally, the police are attempting to retrieve deleted messages from Rezwan’s mobile phone.
It is worth noting that Rezwan Ullah Majarbhuiya, a student from Lala Rural College, was arrested yesterday from the Lala Police Rangpur Fifth village.
The police apprehended him after finding evidence of his involvement with the Al-Qaeda organization and controversial comments on Facebook. The police are also thoroughly investigating whether Rezwan is linked to any sleeper cells of Al-Qaeda and whether other youths are involved in this network.
